Bangkok’s temples, museums, and bustling shopping districts have become part of one vast art exhibition, as the Bangkok Art Biennale 2026 opened with more than 200 artworks from 29 countries, bringing contemporary art into some of the Thai capital’s most recognizable spaces.

Running under the theme “ANGELS & MARA”, the fifth edition of the biennale brings together 72 artists across 11 venues, blending traditional cultural settings with modern artistic expressions. The exhibition opened to visitors on November 1, with the program running until February 28, 2027.

From the historic grounds of Wat Pho and Wat Arun to the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, Bangkok National Museum and major commercial centres, the exhibition transforms the city into a meeting point for art, architecture, spirituality and everyday urban life.

The “ANGELS & MARA” concept draws on Bangkok’s identity as the City of Angels and the Buddhist figure Mara, traditionally associated with temptation and obstacles to enlightenment. Together, the two ideas provide a framework for artists to examine the tensions between good and evil, hope and despair, spirituality and materialism. The exhibition also touches on conflict, identity, memory and the changing realities of modern society.

One of the notable additions is a stronger presence of experimental and immersive art. Thai artist Ploenchan Vinyaratn, for example, presents a large textile installation made from reclaimed yarn, discarded fabric and broken pickleballs, turning discarded materials into an expansive artistic environment. Live performance, film, sound and movement-based works also feature in the program, taking contemporary art beyond conventional paintings and sculptures.

According to The Nation Thailand, the organizers had placed particular emphasis on performance art for the 2026 edition, inviting artists to develop live, sound-based and experimental works for public spaces. The initiative aims to bring art closer to everyday audiences and encourage interaction between artists and visitors.

Beyond the 11 main locations, BAB Plus and BAB Fringe extend the program through independent galleries and exhibition spaces in Bangkok and other provinces, creating further opportunities for emerging artists and local creative communities.

The biennale, organized by the Bangkok Art Biennale Foundation, will continue until February 28, 2027, offering residents and international visitors four months to explore the city through a different artistic lens.
