Christopher Nolan has reached a new box-office milestone. His latest epic, The Odyssey, has become the highest-grossing film of his career. The movie has crossed $1.1 billion worldwide, moving past The Dark Knight Rises.

Released on July 17, The Odyssey has so far collected around $1.104 billion globally. The Dark Knight Rises, released in 2012, finished with about $1.085 billion.

Nolan’s 2008 blockbuster The Dark Knight is now third on the list. It earned just over $1 billion worldwide.

Based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic, The Odyssey follows Odysseus, played by Matt Damon. He is the king of Ithaca who begins a dangerous journey home after the Trojan War.

The film has a star-studded cast. Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Charlize Theron and Lupita Nyong’o are among the leading actors.

The new success is also significant for the cast. It has become the biggest box-office film of Damon, Hathaway and Pattinson’s careers.

For Nolan, the milestone adds to an already strong theatrical record. His films have now earned more than $7 billion worldwide, according to current industry figures.

The Odyssey is produced by Nolan and his wife and longtime collaborator Emma Thomas through their company Syncopy. Universal Pictures is handling the film’s global theatrical release.

The movie also marks another major success for Universal. It is the studio’s third release this year to cross the $1 billion mark, after The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Michael.

Universal’s domestic theatrical distribution chief Jim Orr credited Nolan’s strong relationship with audiences for the film’s performance. He said viewers continue to see Nolan’s films as major theatrical events.

With its strong run still continuing, The Odyssey has added another major chapter to Nolan’s remarkable journey at the global box office.
