The Maldives, widely known for its secluded beaches and luxury resorts, has been ranked the second-noisiest country in the world in the 2026 Noise-Free Nations Index, highlighting the impact of high tourism density and limited land area.

The country recorded a quiet score of 8.48 out of 100, placing it behind Singapore in the ranking. The index considers factors including population and tourist density, rural land, protected areas, motor vehicles, airports and railway networks.

According to Nomad Lawyer, the Maldives has a particularly high concentration of visitors relative to its small land area, while the capital Malé is among the world's most densely populated urban areas.

The finding comes as tourism continues to expand in the Indian Ocean archipelago. The Maldives welcomed its one-millionth tourist of 2026 on June 21, according to the country's Ministry of Tourism. 

Despite the ranking, the Maldives' resort islands can still offer visitors a relatively peaceful experience, with the index largely reflecting the country's overall population, infrastructure and tourism density rather than noise levels at individual resorts.
