India's Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on Saturday following weeks of nationwide student protests over recurring examination paper leaks, marking a significant political setback for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government.

The resignation came after sustained demonstrations led by the youth-driven Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a satirical protest movement that rapidly evolved into one of the largest student mobilizations in recent years. According to Al Jazeera, the movement originated just over a month ago from a social media post asking, "What if all cockroaches came together?"—a response to remarks by India's chief justice that compared unemployed youth to "cockroaches" and "parasites."

Thousands of protesters gathered at New Delhi's Jantar Mantar erupted in celebration after news of Pradhan's resignation was announced. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke dedicated the moment to students who had allegedly died by suicide following repeated examination cancellations and paper leak scandals that have affected millions of candidates across India.

The protesters also demanded compensation for affected families, protection from legal action against demonstrators and a public apology from security forces over the police crackdown during a march towards Parliament on July 20, when more than 100 protesters were reportedly injured.

Images of police using tear gas and batons against demonstrators sparked public outrage and fueled solidarity protests across several Indian cities, including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Lucknow, Jaipur and Patna. The unrest has highlighted growing frustration among India's Generation Z over unemployment, examination irregularities and what protesters describe as a widening disconnect between young citizens and the political establishment.

While welcoming the minister's resignation as a major victory, protest leaders said it represents only the first step toward broader reforms of India's examination system and greater government accountability.

Political observers describe the resignation as one of the most significant concessions made by the Modi government during its 12 years in power, reflecting the growing influence of digitally organized youth movements in shaping India's political landscape.
