Ethnic communities across the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) are celebrating their traditional festivals Biju, Sangrai, Baisu and Changkran with festivity and cultural events, as Prime Minister Tarique Rahman extended greetings to the hill people on the occasion.

In a message issued on Sunday, the premier conveyed heartfelt congratulations to the communities observing these festivals alongside Chaitra Sankranti and the Bengali New Year, expressing hope that the celebrations would bring peace, happiness and prosperity to all.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), the prime minister said the religious and social festivals of all communities regardless of religion, caste or ethnicity are integral to the country’s collective cultural life.

Residents in Rangamati, Bandarban and Khagrachhari districts have been taking part in traditional rituals, water festivals, cultural performances and community gatherings, marking one of the most significant festive periods for the region’s indigenous groups.

In his message, Rahman highlighted that the traditions, heritage and history of ethnic communities in the hill tracts are an inseparable part of Bangladesh’s national identity, enriching its culture with diversity and vibrancy.

He also pointed out the value of communal harmony, noting that the spirit of coexistence is deeply embedded in the country’s folk traditions and has contributed to enhancing Bangladesh’s global image.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment, the prime minister said equal development, security and constitutional rights would be ensured for all citizens, including those from small ethnic communities living in the hills and plains alike.
