A film co-produced by Myanmar, the Czech Republic and France has won the top award at the 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic, marking a significant achievement for Myanmar's independent cinema on the international stage.

Set in Myanmar's commercial capital, Yangon, the film follows the story of a romantic relationship between two young women employed at a textile factory. Through their personal journey, the film explores themes of love, identity and resilience in a society where same-sex relationships remain widely stigmatized.

According to the festival guide, the film "oscillates between tenderness and harshness" while portraying how women's desires and emotional lives endure despite social restrictions. According to Deutsche Welle (DW), the recognition highlights the growing international appreciation for Southeast Asian independent cinema, even as filmmakers from Myanmar continue to work under challenging political and cultural circumstances.

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, one of Central and Eastern Europe's most prestigious film festivals, concluded its 60th edition on July 11 after hosting hundreds of filmmakers, actors and industry professionals from around the world.

The festival also honoured several internationally acclaimed cinema figures with the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema. American actor Dustin Hoffman, 88, received the award in recognition of his celebrated career, which includes Academy Award-winning performances in Kramer vs. Kramer and Rain Man.

French actress Juliette Binoche, who won an Academy Award for The English Patient and is also known for Chocolat, was presented with the same honour. Renowned American cinematographer Robert Richardson, an Oscar winner for his work on JFK, The Aviator and Hugo, also received the Crystal Globe.

Held in the spa city of Karlovy Vary from July 3 to 11, the festival featured 472 screenings of 179 films and sold 132,553 tickets, according to the event's organisers.
