Indian police have seized a large cache of weapons and ammunition near the Myanmar border in Mizoram, underscoring continuing concerns over cross-border arms trafficking amid the conflict in Myanmar.

The seizure took place in Hnahthial district in southern Mizoram, which borders Myanmar. Police arrested three people and recovered seven AK-series assault rifles along with 2,050 rounds of ammunition during the operation.

According to the Times of India, the raid was carried out on August 4 following intelligence inputs about the movement of illegal arms through the border region. Investigators are now trying to trace the source of the weapons and identify the network involved.

The India-Myanmar border has remained a sensitive security zone since fighting escalated in Myanmar following the 2021 military coup. Security agencies on both sides have repeatedly expressed concerns over the movement of arms, narcotics and insurgent groups through the rugged and largely unfenced frontier.

Authorities have not yet said whether the seized weapons were intended for any insurgent outfit or criminal network. Further investigation is underway, while security has been tightened in the area to prevent similar smuggling attempts.
