Bangladesh has expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement in efforts to ease tensions in the Gulf, as Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman held talks with his Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum.

According to a foreign ministry statement released Saturday, the meeting focused on the evolving situation in the Middle East, where ongoing hostilities have raised global concern. Dhaka acknowledged Islamabad’s role in promoting dialogue and seeking a negotiated settlement to the crisis.

The discussion also covered avenues to deepen bilateral cooperation between Bangladesh and Pakistan, signalling a cautious but positive trajectory in ties. Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir was present during the talks.

In a post on social media, Dar said both sides exchanged views on regional developments, particularly Pakistan’s efforts to facilitate diplomatic engagement in the Gulf, adding that he remains optimistic about future relations with Bangladesh.

Despite repeated statements since the United States launched military operations against Iran on February 28, Bangladesh has maintained a notably restrained diplomatic tone. Official communications have avoided directly naming parties involved in the conflict, even following a temporary ceasefire reportedly facilitated by Pakistan.

According to Prothom Alo, this careful wording reflects Dhaka’s broader strategy of balancing its foreign policy posture amid competing geopolitical pressures, especially in the Middle East where Bangladesh has significant economic and expatriate interests.
