Bangladesh has sought technical assistance from the United Kingdom to modernise its police force and strengthen international efforts for the sustainable repatriation of Rohingya refugees.

The request was raised during a bilateral meeting between Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and UK Minister of State for Home Affairs Lord Hanson on Tuesday, held on the sidelines of the Global Fraud Summit 2026 at the Vienna International Centre.

During the talks, Bangladesh underscored its intention to deepen cooperation with the UK in areas such as defence, counter-terrorism, maritime security, and migration management. The Home Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to democratic governance and institutional reform following the 2026 national elections, while expressing appreciation for the UK’s continued support.

According to Business Times, a key priority highlighted in the meeting was the reform of Bangladesh Police, with Dhaka seeking British expertise in training, technology, and institutional development. The aim is to build a modern, accountable, and citizen-focused force that upholds human rights and strengthens public trust.

The Rohingya crisis also featured prominently in the discussion. Bangladesh called on the UK to sustain international diplomatic pressure to ensure the safe, voluntary, and dignified return of displaced Rohingya to Myanmar, stressing that a durable solution is essential for regional stability.

In response, Lord Hanson commended Bangladesh’s efforts in maintaining security and advancing reforms, and assured continued UK cooperation in these critical areas.
