Bangladesh and India have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening defence cooperation, with both sides stressing closer coordination on regional stability, maritime security and other common security challenges.

The understanding came during a meeting between Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi and Prime Minister’s Defence Adviser Brigadier General (Retd) Dr AKM Shamsul Islam at the Armed Forces Division in Dhaka Cantonment on Wednesday.

The two sides discussed expanding professional cooperation between their armed forces, including joint military training, exchange of expertise and experience, disaster management and maritime security.

According to BSS, the meeting also focused on enhancing the professional capabilities of military personnel through joint training programmes and greater exchanges among officers of the two countries.

The discussions come as Bangladesh and India seek to maintain security cooperation while responding to a changing regional security environment. Maritime security and disaster response have emerged as key areas where the neighbouring countries can deepen operational coordination.

During the meeting, Trivedi welcomed Bangladesh’s initiatives in the socio-economic sector and said New Delhi attaches importance to its military and strategic relations with Dhaka.

He also expressed India’s readiness to continue cooperation in professional development, capacity building and areas of shared security interest.

The latest talks underline the importance both countries place on maintaining institutional links between their armed forces, particularly in areas that have direct implications for regional peace and stability.
