Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman has reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to reviving the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation and strengthening regional cooperation, stressing the need for greater integration in South Asia amid evolving global challenges.

Speaking to TRT World on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, Rahman described Bangladesh’s recent democratic transition as “historic,” saying it has laid a solid foundation for political stability and a forward-looking foreign policy.

He noted that despite being home to nearly a quarter of the global population, intra-regional trade in South Asia remains around five percent, underscoring the urgency of deeper cooperation. Recalling the role of Ziaur Rahman in initiating regional collaboration, the minister said revitalizing SAARC is a key priority of the government.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the foreign minister also emphasised that Dhaka continues to engage all relevant stakeholders to find a peaceful and sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis through dialogue and diplomacy.

Rahman further highlighted Bangladesh’s contributions to UN peacekeeping missions, noting that its personnel not only maintain peace but also support community rebuilding efforts in conflict zones.

On bilateral ties, he described relations with Türkiye as “exceptional,” expressing optimism about expanding cooperation in trade, investment, defense, and education, while also acknowledging the role of the Bangladeshi diaspora in national development.
