Bangladesh on Thursday (March 26) marked its 56th Independence and National Day with solemn ceremonies, patriotic rallies, and cultural programmes across the country, commemorating the sacrifices made during the 1971 Liberation War.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman led the nation in paying homage to the martyrs by placing wreaths at the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar, on the outskirts of the capital. They were joined by Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, cabinet members, service chiefs, diplomats, political leaders, and family members of fallen freedom fighters.
The day commemorates the beginning of the armed struggle for independence on March 26, 1971, following the brutal crackdown on civilians during the night of March 25. After a nine-month war and the sacrifice of millions, Bangladesh secured independence on December 16, 1971.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), elaborate programmes were organised nationwide, including gun salutes at dawn, hoisting of the national flag at government and private buildings, and discussions highlighting the historical significance of the Liberation War.
The national flag was raised at sunrise across government offices, educational institutions, and Bangladesh missions abroad, while students participated in rallies and cultural displays. Newspapers published special supplements, and television and radio broadcasters aired programmes focusing on the country’s independence struggle.
The President is scheduled to host a reception at Bangabhaban for families of Bir Sreshtha recipients and decorated freedom fighters, while similar events are being organized at district and upazila levels. Essay competitions, recitations, and painting events are also taking place in schools and colleges.
Museums remain open free of charge, Liberation War films are being screened, and sports events such as football, cricket, and traditional games are being held across districts. Cultural programmes at tourist spots and community gatherings further added to the festive atmosphere.
Special prayers were offered in mosques, temples, churches, and pagodas for the souls of the martyrs and for the nation’s continued peace and prosperity. Meanwhile, special meals were arranged in hospitals, prisons, and welfare institutions nationwide, marking the day with both remembrance and celebration.
