Germany’s defense minister, Boris Pistorius, has said the US decision to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany was “foreseeable,” while stressing that an American military presence remains vital for both sides.
The NATO alliance said it is working with Washington to understand the scope of the move, with spokeswoman Allison Hart confirming ongoing discussions.
US President Donald Trump signalled further reductions beyond 5,000 troops, without giving specifics. The move follows tensions with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over remarks on US-Iran negotiations.
Germany hosts more than 36,000 US troops, the largest presence in Europe. The plan has raised alarm within the alliance, with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warning of growing divisions. US lawmakers, including Roger Wicker and Mike Rogers, also voiced concern, urging a strong American deterrent in Europe.
