Canada reached the FIFA World Cup last 16 for the first time in their history after Stephen Eustaquio scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to seal a 1-0 victory over South Africa in Los Angeles on Sunday.
The match appeared destined for extra time before Eustaquio controlled a clearance outside the box and fired a powerful first-time strike into the bottom corner in the 92nd minute, breaking South African resistance.
According to AFP, Canada dominated much of the contest but struggled to convert several clear chances against an inspired South African defence and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. Alphonso Davies, returning from a hamstring injury, came off the bench in the second half and added attacking impetus as Canada pushed for a breakthrough.
"We felt like we could wear them down over time, and it took 92 minutes, but we got there," Canada coach Jesse Marsch said after the match, praising his side's determination and resilience.
Canada will now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in the Round of 16 on July 4 in Houston, while South Africa's historic World Cup campaign ended after reaching the knockout stage for the first time. South Africa coach Hugo Broos said his team could be proud of its performance despite the narrow defeat.
