Bangladesh created history on Sunday by defeating Australia by nine wickets in the first Test at Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin, securing their maiden Test victory on Australian soil.

The victory marked a watershed moment in Bangladesh’s 26-year Test cricket journey, coming against Australia in conditions traditionally regarded as among the toughest for visiting teams. Bangladesh completed the chase of 57 runs in just 14.2 overs, losing only Tanzid Hasan Tamim.

According to BSS, off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz produced a match-defining performance on the fourth day, claiming five wickets as Australia were bowled out for 284 in their second innings. His spell left Bangladesh needing only 57 runs to complete a historic victory.

Bangladesh had earlier taken firm control of the match after bowling Australia out for 198 in their first innings before posting 426. Tanzid Hasan Tamim struck a memorable century, becoming the first Bangladeshi batter to score a Test hundred on Australian soil, while Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mehidy also made valuable contributions.

Australia fought back through Cameron Green, who scored a century in the second innings, but Bangladesh’s bowlers kept the pressure on. Hasan Mahmud also played a crucial role, finishing the match with nine wickets after taking six wickets in Australia’s first innings.

With the modest target set, Bangladesh’s openers approached the chase confidently. Mominul Haque and Shadman Islam guided the team home without further trouble, completing one of the most significant victories in Bangladesh cricket history.

The result also makes Bangladesh only the third Asian team, after India and Pakistan, to win a Test match on Australian soil. The victory gives Bangladesh a major psychological boost ahead of the second Test and further underlines the team’s growing competitiveness in overseas conditions.
