State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam has reiterated that the “safe, voluntary and dignified” repatriation of forcibly displaced Rohingyas to their homeland in Myanmar’s Rakhine State remains the only durable solution to the protracted crisis.
She made the remarks when a delegation from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), led by its International President Dr Javid Abdelmoneim, met her at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday.
During the meeting, Shama Obaed sought MSF’s continued support in keeping the Rohingya crisis on the international humanitarian agenda, as Bangladesh continues to host a large number of forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals in Cox’s Bazar.
The MSF delegation briefed the State Minister on the organisation’s humanitarian activities in the Rohingya camps, including outpatient and emergency medical care, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services, maternal healthcare, sexual and reproductive health services, and mental health support.
According to UNB, a significant portion of MSF’s services also reaches members of the host communities living alongside the Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar.
The State Minister appreciated MSF’s continued medical humanitarian assistance to Rohingyas and host communities, highlighting the importance of international humanitarian support amid the prolonged displacement crisis.
Bangladesh has repeatedly called for the sustainable return of Rohingyas to Myanmar under conditions that ensure their safety, dignity and rights, while urging the international community to maintain pressure on Myanmar and sustain humanitarian assistance for the displaced population.
The meeting comes as Bangladesh continues diplomatic efforts to advance Rohingya repatriation while humanitarian organisations remain engaged in providing essential healthcare and other services in the camps.
