Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called on the international community to step up efforts to ensure the dignified and sustainable repatriation of Rohingya refugees to their homeland in Myanmar.

He made the appeal during a courtesy meeting with Julie Bishop, Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Myanmar, in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The meeting focused on the prolonged Rohingya crisis and the need for stronger international cooperation to create conditions for the refugees’ safe and dignified return to Myanmar.

According to BSS, the prime minister stressed that resolving the crisis requires an effective and coordinated role from the international community, particularly in facilitating a sustainable solution to the displacement of the Rohingya.

The discussion also covered ways to strengthen international efforts to address the crisis, which has left more than one million Rohingya sheltering in Bangladesh after fleeing violence and persecution in Myanmar.

Bangladesh has repeatedly called for the Rohingyas to return to Myanmar in safety, dignity and with guarantees for their rights and security. Dhaka has also urged the international community to maintain pressure on Myanmar and ensure conditions conducive to a sustainable repatriation process.

The meeting with Bishop came as the Rohingya crisis remains a major regional humanitarian and diplomatic challenge, with Bangladesh continuing to shoulder the bulk of responsibility for hosting the displaced population.
