The United Nations has pledged its full support to Bangladesh in holding the upcoming general elections scheduled for February.

UN Resident Coordinator Gwyn Lewis conveyed the assurance during a meeting with Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus on Thursday at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka, according to a statement from the Chief Advisor’s Office (CAO).

Lewis commended the cooperation between the UN and the interim government, noting that discussions covered Bangladesh’s development priorities, reform agenda, and preparations for the national polls.

“The UN fully supports the February general election. It is crucial for the country’s democratic transition,” Lewis said, reaffirming the organization's commitment to assist the Election Commission in ensuring a transparent, free, fair, and peaceful electoral process.

The two sides also discussed expanding UN support for the government’s reform initiatives, preparations for the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York, and the Rohingya conference later this month.

Both expressed deep concern over the sharp decline in international funding for Rohingya humanitarian operations, which has already affected education and essential services in the refugee camps.

Chief Advisor Yunus stressed the urgent need for global solidarity and enhanced international cooperation to close the funding gap and sustain Bangladesh’s humanitarian efforts for the displaced population.

Lewis reiterated the UN’s strong commitment to Bangladesh’s reform and transition process, highlighting its long-term support for sustainable development and prosperity.
