Thailand has summoned Myanmar’s military attaché over repeated cross-border incidents linked to fighting in Karen State, warning Naypyitaw to exercise caution as clashes increasingly threaten Thai civilians and border communities.
Thailand’s Chief of Defense Forces, General Ukrit Buntanont, summoned Brigadier General Win Thu Lin on Monday after Myanmar military operations injured a Thai national and damaged property on the Thai side.
The Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters said Ukrit stressed that Myanmar must consider the safety of Thai citizens and their property during military operations near the border. Bangkok has also sent formal protest letters to Naypyitaw to prevent further escalation, Thai PBS reported.
According to The Irrawaddy, clashes between Myanmar’s military and the Karen National Union (KNU) and allied forces around Myawaddy have repeatedly sent stray ammunition into Thailand.
On October 22, a mortar shell damaged two houses in Thailand, while cross-border fire injured a Thai citizen on October 29. Two days later, Myanmar military aircraft bombed the KNU-controlled Thaw Le Hta checkpoint, opposite Mae Sam Laep in Thailand’s Mae Hong Son province, shattering windows in nearby Thai buildings.
The Thai Air Force subsequently deployed two F-16 fighter jets to patrol the border. The repeated incidents have heightened security concerns among Thai residents, some of whom have staged protests demanding stronger protection.
