Saudi Arabia has conferred one of its highest national honors on Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, underscoring the deepening strategic and defense ties between the two longstanding allies.

According to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), Saudi Minister of Defense Prince Khalid bin Salman presented Field Marshal Munir with the King Abdulaziz Medal of the First Class during a ceremony at his office in Riyadh on Sunday (December21), following a royal order from King Salman. The award recognizes Munir’s distinguished efforts in strengthening Saudi-Pakistani relations, enhancing joint defense cooperation, and advancing bilateral ties.

Prince Khalid congratulated Munir on his appointment and wished him success, while the meeting reviewed historical ties, strategic defense cooperation, and efforts to promote international peace and security. Senior Saudi officials, including Deputy Minister of Defense Prince Abdulrahman bin Mohammed bin Ayyaf and Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Fayyad bin Hamed Al-Ruwaili, were in attendance. The Pakistani delegation was led by Ambassador Ahmed Farooq along with senior military officials.

According to Arab News, the honor highlights the kingdom’s appreciation for Munir’s leadership and his role in expanding defense coordination at a time of evolving regional and global security challenges, reflecting the strategic depth of Saudi-Pakistani relations.

Pakistan’s military said the conferring of the medal “underscores the depth of Pakistan-Saudi Arabia relations and the shared determination of both nations to further strengthen strategic cooperation in pursuit of regional and global peace.” It added that the award recognizes Munir’s military service, leadership, and efforts to advance institutional and defense links between the two countries.

Munir’s visit to Saudi Arabia his first since his promotion to Pakistan’s newly created post of chief of defense forces also included discussions on regional security, counterterrorism cooperation, and broader geopolitical developments. Saudi leaders praised his professionalism and strategic outlook, while Munir expressed gratitude for the honor and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the kingdom’s security, stability, and prosperity.

Saudi Arabia and Pakistan have maintained close economic, religious, and defense ties for decades, with cooperation rooted in regional security coordination and Islamabad’s stated commitment to safeguarding the Islamic holy sites in Mecca and Medina.
