Malaysian home minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said,  the Rohingya influx is due to push-and-pull factors. He cited political instability and dire conditions in Myanmar as the primary reasons for their exodus. According to him, push factors in Myanmar are the main driver.

He said this after visiting the preparations for the Asia International Security Summit and Expo here.

He said, "At the same time, Malaysia's political stability and multicultural society act as pull factors, giving them hope that their lives might improve here."

Security forces are ready to safeguard maritime borders amid rising attempts by Myanmar refugees to enter, said the minister.

Ismail said, enforcement agencies have been detecting boats carrying Rohingya refugees in international waters almost daily.

Referring to a recent case of refugees landing in Langkawi, Saifuddin said the authorities quickly housed them in Immigration detention depots. He said that Malaysia approaches the matter with humanity while maintaining strict border control.

"Our enforcement teams, especially the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, ensure our maritime borders are secure. Safeguarding our sovereignty is a priority."

He said, the issue of Myanmar refugees is a recurring topic at the Asean level, and Malaysia will continue to monitor and address the situation with diligence and compassion.
