Malaysia has said Myanmar must address the root causes of the Rohingya crisis to pave the way for the safe and sustainable return of the displaced ethnic minority to their homeland.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said Malaysia was continuing diplomatic efforts at bilateral, regional and international levels to ensure the Rohingya could return voluntarily, safely and with dignity.
According to the Star Daily, Mohamad made the remarks in a written parliamentary reply on Tuesday, October 20, stressing that repatriation could not be achieved without addressing the underlying causes of the crisis in Myanmar.
He said Malaysia was engaging with Myanmar authorities to promote the protection of Rohingya rights and ensure equal opportunities for them to rebuild their lives without discrimination or exclusion.
Mohamad added that a lasting solution required concrete action from Myanmar, along with continued support from ASEAN and the international community.
At the regional level, ASEAN continues to rely on its Five-Point Consensus as the main framework for addressing Myanmar’s crisis. The plan focuses on ending violence, ensuring humanitarian assistance reaches people in need without discrimination, and promoting inclusive dialogue among all stakeholders.
He said ASEAN’s special envoy on Myanmar was continuing efforts to advance the implementation of the consensus, while the bloc was exploring additional initiatives to encourage Myanmar’s cooperation in restoring peace and stability.
Malaysia is also supporting humanitarian assistance through the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on disaster management (AHA Centre), which works with the United Nations and other international partners to deliver aid to people affected by the conflict.
Mohamad said Malaysia would continue its diplomatic and humanitarian efforts to support a lasting resolution to the crisis.
