A young Indian activist has built an AI-assisted volunteer network to help protesters detained during antigovernment demonstrations in New Delhi find their way home after police release them far from protest sites.
The initiative, called Detainee Gharwapsi Yojana, uses digital mapping, information from volunteers and a transport network to assist demonstrators left stranded without money, phone access or safe transport.
According to Al Jazeera, the network was developed by 25-year-old Rajiv Choudhary as protests intensified over alleged irregularities in India’s electoral rolls. The demonstrations have drawn thousands of people demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The initiative came into focus after a 19-year-old woman was detained during a protest and taken with other demonstrators to a location about 50 kilometres from central New Delhi. Left alone on a dark road with her phone battery drained and no cash, she struggled to find a way home before volunteers arrived to help her.
Choudhary’s team initially relied on a spreadsheet to organise assistance but later developed a digital dashboard to process information, track locations and coordinate rescue rides. Volunteers share details, including police bus numbers and locations, through WhatsApp.
The network, which began with a small group, has grown to more than 130 volunteers providing transport, legal assistance and medical support, with particular attention to women, minors and elderly protesters.
India’s capital has witnessed repeated demonstrations since early October, led by the satirical Cockroach Janta Party, student groups and the opposition Congress party. Authorities have responded with roadblocks, metro station closures and mass detentions.
Currently operating only in New Delhi, Choudhary hopes to expand the initiative to other cities. Volunteers and drivers are offering their services without charge.
For protesters who find themselves abandoned far from home, the initiative offers more than a ride. It provides a measure of safety and solidarity at a time when exercising the right to protest can leave them vulnerable.
