A 25-year-old man has reportedly been beaten to death by Myanmar’s military after refusing to join the armed forces under the country’s mandatory conscription law.

The incident took place in Nyaung Phyar village, Bogale Township, Ayeyarwady Region. The victim, Maung Aung Aung, had a verbal altercation with local village administrator Myo Min Aung, who then allegedly contacted the 534th Light Infantry Battalion to have him forcibly conscripted.

On July 10, Maung Aung Aung was taken by the military. His family, desperate to secure his release, was asked to pay a bribe of 1.2 million kyats. They sold farmland to gather the money and delivered it the next day. But by then, he was already dead.

His body, retrieved from the mortuary at Mawlamyinegyun Hospital, showed clear signs of torture—head injuries, broken teeth, and severe bruising.

Although he was detained under Myanmar’s People’s Military Service Law, which mandates forced conscription, the manner of his death has sparked outrage. To date, no action has been taken against the village administrator or the military personnel involved.

This killing adds to the growing concerns over Myanmar’s use of conscription as a tool of repression amid the country’s ongoing political and humanitarian crisis.
