Myanmar’s newly elected Union Parliament is set to convene later next month, marking a key step in the country’s post-election political process, as the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) prepares to form the next government.

An official announcement issued Monday (February 23) night confirmed that the first session of the third Pyithu Hluttaw (Lower House) will open on March 16. The notice was released by the parliamentary office in Naypyitaw.

In a separate statement, the National Defense and Security Council said the inaugural session of the third Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House) will be held on March 18, followed by the opening of the third Region and State Hluttaws on March 20.

According to Xinhua, the sequential convening of the Union-level and regional legislatures is part of the constitutional process required to establish the new administration after the general election held earlier this year.

The Union Solidarity and Development Party secured a majority of seats in the bicameral Union Parliament, based on official results released by the Union Election Commission.

Myanmar’s Union Parliament comprises two chambers with a total of 664 seats. The Pyithu Hluttaw holds 440 seats, while the Amyotha Hluttaw consists of 224 members.

Once both houses are formally convened, lawmakers will move to elect a new president in accordance with constitutional procedures. The president will then appoint members of the Union Government, paving the way for the formation of a new administration.

The upcoming parliamentary sessions are expected to formalize the transition of power and set the legislative agenda for the coming term.
