Myanmar has officially inaugurated the University of Agriculture and Livestock Breeding (Maubin), a major strategic move designed to significantly enhance the nation's human resource capacity and modernize its cornerstone economic sectors.

 The institution, under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, was opened in a ceremony attended by Acting President and Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, yesterday (November 25) morning.

The inauguration signals a commitment to boosting education in sectors that contribute 23.7 percent of the country's GDP and support the livelihoods of approximately 46 percent of the population. The Senior General stressed that the university's opening for the 2025–2026 academic year will directly address the skilled labor shortage in the agricultural and livestock fields, which is vital for national economic strength and growth in rural incomes.

The new institution aims not only to provide academic education but also to become a research-oriented institution capable of producing internationally qualified professionals, according to an ANN report. The University of Agriculture and Livestock Breeding (Maubin) is projected to produce 300 agricultural and livestock professionals annually, substantially increasing the national output which was previously reliant only on Yezin University of Agriculture and the University of Veterinary Science.

The university features an extensive academic structure, comprising 13 major departments in agricultural sciences, 12 departments in livestock sciences, and three in arts and science. Furthermore, the introduction of livestock science degrees is intended to enable graduates and rural residents to diversify income through off-season livestock activities, thereby helping to reduce poverty in the countryside. Plans are also underway to establish a similar university in upper Myanmar and to open agriculture and livestock breeding colleges in every region and state. Following the ceremony, the Senior General visited the university and other educational institutions in the area.
