Myanmar’s military leader, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, has formally requested U.S. President Donald Trump to reduce the recently imposed 40% tariff on Myanmar’s exports to the United States, according to a report by state media on Friday.

In response to a letter from President Trump notifying Myanmar of the new tariffs, Min Aung Hlaing proposed a revised rate between 10% and 20%. In return, he pledged to lower Myanmar’s own import duties on U.S. goods to a range of zero to 10%.

State media said the senior general expressed admiration for Trump’s “strong leadership” and his commitment to national prosperity, calling him “a true patriot.”

Myanmar has also indicated its readiness to send a negotiation team to Washington to discuss the matter further. The military-led government is seeking to mitigate the economic fallout of the sweeping trade measures recently announced by the Trump administration.
