The Burmese Women’s Union (BWU) has reported that at least 73 women were killed across Myanmar in August amid escalating military offensives, including airstrikes, artillery shelling, and other forms of violence.

According to the report released on Monday (8 September), aerial bombardments accounted for the highest number of fatalities, with 54 women killed. Seven women were killed by artillery fire, three were burned to death, and one died as a result of sexual violence. Among the victims were 14 minors under the age of 18.

The highest toll was recorded in Mandalay Region with 27 deaths, followed by 14 in Magway Region. Other fatalities included eight in Karenni State, seven each in Sagaing Region and Rakhine State, four each in Kachin State and Bago Region, and one each in Shan and Tanintharyi regions.

“Since the illegal terrorist Military Commission attempted to seize power on 1 February 2021, they have been committing war crimes, crimes against humanity, and widespread human rights violations by various means for nearly five years,” BWU stated.

The organization highlighted a sharp increase in the junta’s reliance on airstrikes compared to previous months. It also cautioned that the actual death toll may be higher, as the figures were compiled from media outlets and on-the-ground sources.
