The government and people of Myanmar have extended urgent humanitarian assistance to Sri Lanka following the devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah, which struck on 28 November 2025. The cyclone triggered widespread flooding and landslides across 25 districts, affecting more than 900,000 people and severely damaging homes, roads, and vital infrastructure.

Acting on the directive of Myanmar’s Head of State, a delegation led by U Zaw Phyo Win, Director-General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Daw Lei Lei Aye, Director-General of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, departed for Colombo on the night of 6 December. They were received by Myanmar’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Daw Marlar Than Htaik, along with senior Sri Lankan officials, including Chanmari Rodrigo of Southeast and Central Asia Affairs and Air Vice Marshal S. Deshapriya G. M. Silva.

According to Myanmar News Agency, the delegation handed over 9.2 tonnes of medicines, medical supplies, and personal health items transported by a military aircraft to support Sri Lanka’s recovery efforts. The assistance package, valued at approximately US$120,000, also includes 500 tonnes of rice and an additional US$100,000 in relief funds to be delivered in the coming days.

Officials noted that the humanitarian gesture underscores the close ties between Myanmar and Sri Lanka and reflects Myanmar’s commitment to supporting its regional partners in times of crisis.
