Malaysia’s former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad, who recently turned 100, was taken to hospital on Tuesday(January 6) following a fall at his residence, his aide confirmed.

Mahathir was brought to the National Heart Institute for medical observation after the incident, which occurred as he was moving from a balcony area into the living room of his home. His aide, Sufi Yusoff, said the veteran statesman was conscious after the fall, but doctors were still assessing whether hospital admission would be necessary.

“It’s still too early to say if he will be admitted,” Sufi said, adding that no further details about Mahathir’s condition were available at this stage.

The former premier has faced a series of health issues in recent years, including heart-related problems that required bypass surgeries in the past. He was also hospitalized earlier this year due to fatigue shortly after a picnic celebration marking his 100th birthday.

According to a TRT report, Mahathir has remained an outspoken and influential public figure despite his age, frequently commenting on global affairs and sharply criticizing what he sees as moral failures by world powers, including their stance on the war in Gaza.

Mahathir Mohamad is one of Malaysia’s most consequential political leaders, having overseen the country’s rapid economic transformation during his first tenure as prime minister from 1981 to 2003. He made a remarkable political comeback in 2018, returning to office at the age of 92 and serving until 2020, making him the world’s oldest elected leader at the time.

Doctors are expected to continue monitoring his condition, while supporters across Malaysia and beyond await further updates on his health.
