The United Nations Human Rights Fact-Finding Mission presented its report on violations and torture during the July-August 2024 protests in Bangladesh at a session attended by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk. The event, held at 6:00 PM Bangladesh time, saw participation from representatives of various countries and organizations, who raised questions and opinions regarding the findings.
Dr. Asif Nazrul, a legal expert, addressed the session and focused on two key issues: political violence against individuals linked to the Awami League’s past regime and electoral rights in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
Commenting on political violence, Nazrul acknowledged incidents targeting those associated with the previous Awami League government, stating, “There have been incidents targeting those linked to the Awami League regime, which tortured and killed people for years. This has led to some attacks. We condemn them, but most have targeted Muslims, with only a few involving minorities. Labelling this as an attack on minorities isn’t accurate—we have verified statistics to support this.”
On the issue of elections in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, he emphasized the government’s commitment to upholding voting rights. “Our government is committed to ensuring every Bangladeshi’s right to vote, whether in the Chittagong Hill Tracts or elsewhere. A commission is already working on local government issues to uphold this,” he affirmed.
The report's findings and recommendations for accountability, justice, and human rights reforms were set to be discussed further with member states and civil society representatives. Bangladesh’s interim government, along with civil society groups, was also expected to take part in these discussions to ensure transparency and commitment to human rights without discrimination.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights reiterated that justice and accountability should be pursued without bias, emphasizing that no state should discriminate against its people when ensuring fundamental rights and freedoms.
