State Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin has announced plans to transform the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) into a world-class ecotourism destination, prioritizing sustainable development, improved connectivity and peaceful coexistence.

Speaking at a coordination meeting at the Hathazari Upazila Office, the minister said the CHT is a sensitive yet resource-rich region with vast tourism potential. “We will work together to turn this region into a global-standard tourist destination,” he said, adding that eco-friendly tourism would create jobs while protecting biodiversity and local culture.

The CHT  comprising Rangamati, Bandarban and Khagrachhari  is known for its scenic hills, waterfalls, lakes, forests and diverse indigenous heritage. With proper infrastructure, community-based tourism, and environmental safeguards, the region could attract significant domestic and foreign investment, boosting the local economy.

Helal said visible changes would be brought within five years through better roads, healthcare, education and transport links to support tourism growth. According to The Daily Sun, he stressed inclusive development without political bias and said projects would generate income for hill communities while preserving their traditions.

Referring to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s slogan “Sobar Agey Bangladesh,” he called for unity to ensure balanced development.

The minister also announced a zero-tolerance policy against crime and illegal land occupation, steps to restore canals for farmers, and coordinated measures to ease traffic congestion in key areas of Hathazari.

Later, he paid tribute to Language Movement martyrs at the Shaheed Minar and distributed prizes marking Amar Ekushey during his first official visit to Hathazari.
