As the Jharkhand assembly elections unfold, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has raised concerns, accusing the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led government of facilitating the ‘infiltration’ of Rohingya refugees. While several BJP members have previously run anti-Rohingya campaigns, this marks the first time the Prime Minister has addressed the issue directly during an election campaign. Political analysts suggest the move is aimed at garnering support in the ongoing polls. Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President JP Nadda have also echoed similar sentiments on the matter.

India is home to numerous refugee communities from across the globe, including over 92,000 Sri Lankan and 73,000 Tibetan refugees. According to the UNHCR, approximately 22,000 Rohingya refugees are registered with the organization, while the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs estimates their numbers to be over 40,000. Additionally, the country hosts more than 30,000 refugees from Myanmar and around 12,000 Afghan refugees.
