Bangladesh ranks sixth among South Asian countries in terms of internet usage, highlighting a persistent digital gap in the region. According to a recent report by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The report cites high internet costs, infrastructural limitations, and low digital literacy as key factors slowing the growth of internet access in Bangladesh. Among South Asian countries, Afghanistan ranks lowest, with only 17 out of every 100 people using the internet, followed by Pakistan at 27 users per 100 people. Bhutan leads the region with 88 users per 100 people, while the Maldives follows closely at 84 per 100.

Despite this, Bangladesh shows strong performance in mobile connectivity. The number of active mobile phone subscribers exceeds the country’s total population, reflecting multiple subscriptions per person. In 2023, Bangladesh ranked fourth in mobile penetration among South Asian countries, with 114 users per 100 people. Sri Lanka led the region at 142 users per 100 people.

In terms of total users, India tops the region with 1.16 billion mobile subscribers, while Bangladesh ranks second with 196.1 million users, followed by Pakistan at 188.4 million.

The ADB report also highlights broadband and 4G connectivity in the region. India leads in broadband Internet users with 39.5 million subscribers, while Bangladesh comes second with 13.5 million. For LTE or 4G coverage, the Maldives tops the list with full population coverage, and Bangladesh follows closely at 98.9 per cent, slightly ahead of India’s 98.8 per cent.

The findings underscore both the progress and challenges in Bangladesh’s digital landscape, reflecting strong mobile connectivity but continued efforts needed to expand affordable and accessible internet for all.
