Bangladesh on Tuesday (January 13) summoned Myanmar’s Ambassador to Dhaka, U Kyaw Soe Moe, to protest a recent incident of cross-border gunfire that left a Bangladeshi child seriously injured near the Whykong Union of Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar.

During the meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bangladesh conveyed its deep concern over the firing from Myanmar territory towards Bangladesh, terming it unprovoked and a clear violation of international law as well as an obstacle to maintaining good neighborly relations.

A 12-year-old Bangladeshi girl sustained severe injuries in the incident, which heightened alarm among local residents living along the border.

According to a BSS report, Dhaka strongly urged Myanmar to take full responsibility for the incident and to adopt effective measures to ensure that such cross-border firings do not recur in the future. Bangladesh also emphasized that internal conflicts between Myanmar authorities and armed groups must not be allowed to affect the lives, safety, and livelihoods of people on the Bangladeshi side of the border.

In response, Ambassador U Kyaw Soe Moe assured the Bangladeshi authorities that his government would take necessary steps to prevent similar incidents. He also expressed sincere sympathy for the injured girl and her family, the foreign ministry said.
