Bangladesh has etched its name into the Guinness World Records by staging the world’s largest flag-carrying parachuting display, as 54 skydivers descended simultaneously while holding the national flag on the occasion of the country’s 54th Victory Day.
The historic jump took place at 12:00 pm at the old Tejgaon Airport in Dhaka in the presence of Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.
The record-setting feat was performed by “Team Bangladesh,” comprising 46 members of the Bangladesh Army, five from the Navy, two from the Air Force, and Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun, Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA).
Leaping from an altitude of 12,000 feet, the team executed a synchronised free-fall, unfurling the national flag mid-air in a powerful display of patriotism and unity. In a solemn tribute, parachutists numbered 49 to 54 carried the names of six Bangladeshi peacekeepers who lost their lives in Sudan, honouring their sacrifice in the service of global peace.
The operation was supervised by Brigadier General MM Imrul Hasan, who served as the Drop Zone Commander.
Victory Day observances began at dawn with a 31-gun salute in Dhaka, followed by wreath-laying at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar by President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.
The celebrations also included a tri-service fly-past by the Army, Navy and Air Force, alongside a special military band performance. Similar aerial displays and public programmes are being held across the country by the armed forces, police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Ansar, marking the historic day nationwide.
