The discovery of three Rohingya youths’ decomposed remains in northern Maungdaw has reignited fears of systematic extrajudicial killings in Arakan (Rakhine State), as the Arakan Army (AA) tightens its grip on the region. The bodies of Foys (17), Yasin (15), and Jani Alam (15), who were forcibly taken by AA fighters on December 17, 2024, were found in a remote area near Jaar Hkaung Village, raising serious concerns over the armed group's brutal tactics.
A Pattern of Unchecked Violence
Witnesses say the three boys were arrested while catching birds in a forest near their village, U Shey Cha. When their families approached the AA for answers, they were met with denials. Their remains—reduced to bones—were only identified by their clothes and belongings.
“This was not an isolated case,” said a local activist. “AA’s rule has become synonymous with abductions, torture, and killings. The Rohingya are living in fear.”
Since the AA took control of parts of northern Rakhine, reports of arbitrary detentions, forced labor, and executions have surged. Locals fear that the latest killings signal a worsening trend of targeted violence.
A Region on the Brink
Beyond the Rohingya community, the broader conflict in Rakhine is descending into chaos. The AA, originally a rebel group fighting against Myanmar’s military, now seeks full control of the region. However, its governance has been marred by allegations of war crimes, including forced disappearances and ethnic persecution.
Human rights groups are calling for an independent investigation into these extrajudicial killings, but with Myanmar's junta locked in conflict and the international community largely silent, justice seems distant.
“The world must wake up,” a relative of one of the victims urged. “If this continues, more innocent lives will be lost.”
As tensions rise, the people of Rakhine face an uncertain future, trapped between armed groups, state repression, and international neglect. The question remains—how many more lives must be lost before action is taken?
