Gana Unnayan Kendra (GUK), a Gaibandha-based non-government development organization, has won the prestigious 'Guardian of the Earth' award from the Global Law Thinkers Society.
The organization was recognized for its substantial contribution to the development, empowerment, and sustainable change among the hard-to-reach char communities in the northern region of Bangladesh.
The award was formally presented at a ceremony held at the international conference hall of Daffodil International University in Dhaka on October 25.
Haris bin Haji Othman, the Ambassador of Brunei Darussalam to Bangladesh, attended the event as the chief guest and handed over the award to GUK's Executive Chief, Abdus Salam.
In his acceptance speech, Abdus Salam termed the recognition "a testament to GUK's long-standing commitment and dedication to the welfare of char people in the northern region"BSS reported.
He stated that the award would further inspire him and his colleagues to continue their development initiatives aimed at improving the living standards of disadvantaged communities.
An official from GUK noted that the organization has been working for over four decades to uplift the ultra-poor, backward, and underprivileged, including those living in isolated char areas.
Sources said the ceremony also honored various other organizations and individuals from five countries, including Bangladesh.
