US President Donald Trump has warned that Iran would face a severe response if it was found responsible for an alleged attempt to sabotage a Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

Speaking at the White House on Thursday, Trump said Iran was likely involved in the incident, although investigations were still underway.

“I would say the answer, based on what I'm hearing, is yes, but we're working on it right now,” he told reporters when asked whether Tehran was behind the incident.

Asked whether Washington would retaliate if Iran's involvement was confirmed, Trump said, “Oh, they'll be hit very hard, don't worry.”

According to CNA, the flight was reportedly endangered after its co-pilot allegedly assaulted the captain, prompting passengers to intervene and prevent a possible crash. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the suspect had undergone radical indoctrination.

Trump's warning comes as tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high, with the US president adopting a tougher stance over the stalled conflict.

In a Time magazine interview published Thursday, Trump also said it was “possible” that he could resume bombing Iran after next month's US midterm elections.
