Russia said more than 390 Ukrainian drones targeted the Moscow region overnight in one of the largest aerial attacks on the capital area since the war began, just hours before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was expected to meet US President Donald Trump.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Russian air defence systems intercepted most of the drones before they reached the city. He said 81 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were destroyed while approaching Moscow, preventing major damage to the capital.

According to AFP, Sobyanin said more than 390 drones were detected flying toward the Moscow region between 8:30 p.m. Monday and 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, with the majority neutralised by Russian air defence forces before reaching Moscow.

The attacks caused damage in parts of the wider Moscow region. Regional Governor Andrey Vorobyov said residential buildings were hit in the town of Chekhov and the village of Vaulovo, though he did not immediately report any casualties.

The large-scale drone assault came amid continued cross-border attacks between Russia and Ukraine and coincided with heightened diplomatic activity, as Zelensky prepared to hold talks with Trump on the conflict and future Western support for Kyiv.

Both sides have increasingly relied on long-range drone strikes in recent months, with Ukraine targeting military and infrastructure sites deep inside Russian territory while Russia continues missile and drone attacks across Ukraine.
