Bangladesh Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has called on the international community to play a stronger role in resolving the Rohingya crisis and ensuring the sustainable repatriation of forcibly displaced Myanmar nationals to their homeland.
He made the call during a meeting with Julie Bishop, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Myanmar, at the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Bangladesh Secretariat today.
According to BSS, the meeting discussed Myanmar’s political and security situation, the Rohingya crisis and the prospects for repatriation. Ahmed said Bangladesh was facing a prolonged humanitarian crisis after sheltering hundreds of thousands of Rohingya fleeing conflict in Myanmar.
He stressed the need for stronger international engagement to find a lasting solution, while Bishop outlined the ongoing conflict in Myanmar and her diplomatic efforts to help end the violence and protect civilians.
The two sides also expressed concern over landmines along border areas, human trafficking and drug smuggling, highlighting their wider regional and global implications.
They underscored the importance of political dialogue and international cooperation to create conditions for the safe, dignified and voluntary return of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.
Additional Secretary of the Home Ministry’s Political and Immigration Wing Dr Ziauddin Ahmed, Joint Secretary Rebka Khan, UN Resident Coordinator Carol Flore-Smereczniak, Senior Political Affairs Officer Duncan Keith Wilson and UNHCR Deputy Representative Juliette Murekeyisoni, among others, attended the meeting.
