A high-level Saudi Arabian delegation has expressed interest in investing up to $1 billion in Bangladesh's ports, railways and other strategic infrastructure projects during a meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in Dhaka on Tuesday.
The delegation, led by Saudi Arabia's Vice Minister for Transport and Logistic Services Dr Rumaih Mohammed Al-Rumaih, met the prime minister at the Prime Minister's Office in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, according to the Prime Minister's Press Wing.
The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations, expanding economic cooperation and exploring investment opportunities in Bangladesh's infrastructure sector.
During the meeting, the delegation informed the prime minister that Red Sea Gateway Terminal International is interested in investing $180 million in the development of the proposed Bay Terminal in Bangladesh. The company also plans to expand its overall investment in Bangladesh's port sector to $1 billion in the coming years.
Saudi officials also said several other Saudi companies are exploring opportunities to invest in Bangladesh's ports, railways and other priority sectors, with detailed discussions expected at future joint meetings between the two countries.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman welcomed the Saudi interest, describing Bangladesh's long-standing relations with Saudi Arabia as a key pillar of his government's foreign and economic policy.
He highlighted his administration's investment-friendly policies and ongoing reforms aimed at creating a more attractive environment for foreign investors, encouraging Saudi businesses to take advantage of emerging opportunities.
The Saudi delegation reaffirmed its commitment to deepening economic cooperation with Bangladesh and invited the prime minister to visit Saudi Arabia to further strengthen bilateral engagement.
Road Transport and Bridges, and Railways Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam, Prime Minister's Adviser on Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir, and Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) Executive Chairman Ashik Chowdhury attended the meeting.
The Saudi delegation also included Assistant Deputy Minister for Investment Engineer Ammar Al-Taff, Red Sea Gateway Terminal International Board CEO Amer Reda, Red Sea Gateway Terminal CEO Lars Vang, Saudi Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr Abdullah Zafer H. bin Abiyah, and other senior officials.
