United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed veteran Bangladeshi diplomat Rabab Fatima as the new head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), marking another significant international leadership role for a Bangladeshi official.
According to BSS, the UN announced on Wednesday that Fatima will lead the political mission in Afghanistan, succeeding Canada's Georgette Gagnon, who had been serving as acting head of UNAMA following her tenure as deputy special representative.
Currently serving as the UN High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States, Fatima brings more than three decades of experience in diplomacy, public policy, international development and multilateral affairs. Before joining the United Nations Secretariat, she served Bangladesh in several diplomatic postings and later as the country's permanent representative to the UN in New York.
In a statement, the office of the UN secretary-general's spokesperson said Fatima's extensive experience spans bilateral and multilateral diplomacy, policymaking, advocacy, and programme planning and implementation, making her well positioned to lead the UN's engagement in Afghanistan.
Established in 2002, UNAMA has remained the UN's principal political mission in Afghanistan. Since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, the mission has focused on coordinating humanitarian assistance, facilitating dialogue with Afghan stakeholders and the international community, and monitoring the country's human rights situation.
The UN Security Council renewed UNAMA's mandate for another year in June, despite concerns raised by the United States over certain aspects of the mission's objectives and approach. The renewed mandate allows the mission to continue supporting humanitarian coordination, political engagement and international efforts aimed at promoting stability in Afghanistan.
Fatima's appointment underscores Bangladesh's growing profile within the United Nations system and reflects the continued presence of Bangladeshi diplomats in senior international leadership positions.
