Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus is expected to participate in the COP29 Summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, this November. The summit, which will bring together over 32,000 participants, will primarily focus on the critical issue of climate finance, a senior foreign ministry official informed UNB.
Scheduled from November 11 to 22, the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) is seen as a significant opportunity to push for urgent actions addressing the climate crisis. The global community, reeling from record-high temperatures and extreme weather events, will convene to drive forward concrete solutions involving governments, businesses, and civil society.
A central theme of COP29 will be the financial investments required to curb greenhouse gas emissions and safeguard populations from the escalating impacts of climate change. According to the United Nations, trillions of dollars are needed for nations to make the necessary adjustments.
Countries are also expected to present updated national climate action plans in line with the Paris Agreement during the summit. These updates, due by early 2025, are crucial to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels and serve as investment strategies to support the Sustainable Development Goals.
In related developments, the non-resident ambassador of Azerbaijan to Bangladesh, Elchin Huseynli, met with Chief Adviser Prof Yunus at the state guest house Jamuna in Dhaka on October 22. The discussion covered the upcoming COP29, as well as bilateral energy, trade, and business cooperation.
Ambassador Huseynli emphasized the importance of strengthening trade ties, noting that Azerbaijan is eager to explore new business opportunities. He also mentioned a recent foreign office consultation between the two nations, held in Baku in June, and expressed Azerbaijan's interest in signing an air services agreement with Bangladesh.
Prof Yunus praised Azerbaijan as "a good friend" and called for expanded business and trade relations between the two countries, referencing his longstanding connections with the Azerbaijani people, its leadership, and universities.
