The government is exploring the integration of the "Three Zeros" theory pioneered by Nobel Peace Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus into its Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) framework. Policymakers believe the adoption of this model targeting zero poverty, zero unemployment, and zero net carbon emissions could accelerate the country's progress toward achieving the SDG targets.
Transforming Vision into Action
The "Three Zeros" theory has garnered global recognition as an innovative approach to fostering economic empowerment. It has created a skilled workforce, and ensuring environmental sustainability. Experts emphasize that the framework leverages youth engagement, technological advancements, good governance, and social business to achieve its ambitious goals.
Highlighting the potential of the model, the principal coordinator on SDG affairs revealed that efforts are underway to integrate it into national strategies. A recent workshop with public and private stakeholders aimed to raise awareness about the theory and its relevance to sustainable development.
“We are committed to promoting the ‘Three Zeros’ concept across all sectors as part of our SDG implementation strategy. While no mega initiatives specifically for the theory have been launched, its principles align closely with our SDG priorities,” the coordinator said.
Lamiya Morshed, principal coordinator for national SDGs affairs added that while the model isn’t being imposed, the government is encouraging its voluntary adoption by individuals and organizations to foster widespread impact.
A Global Vision for a Sustainable Future
Speaking at the COP-29 Climate Summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, Professor Yunus called for a cultural shift toward a "zero waste" and "zero carbon" lifestyle to combat climate change.
“To survive, we must create a counter-culture centered on sustainability,” Yunus stated. “This involves limiting consumption to essential needs, eliminating waste, and transitioning entirely to renewable energy.”
Professor Yunus described a future economy driven by social businesses non-dividend enterprises designed to solve societal and environmental challenges. These businesses would promote affordable healthcare, quality education, and entrepreneurial opportunities for the youth, reshaping the global workforce.
“Young people will grow up embracing a ‘Three Zeros’ lifestyle, becoming entrepreneurs who achieve zero net carbon emissions, zero wealth concentration, and zero unemployment,” he explained. “This paradigm shift will lead to a new civilization.”
Toward a New Era
As the government integrates Professor Yunus' visionary framework into its SDG initiatives. the emphasis is on fostering grassroots awareness and voluntary adoption. Policymakers and analysts remain optimistic that the "Three Zeros" model can inspire a sustainable, inclusive future for the nation and the world.
