The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has revealed that 48 Indian students studying in the United States have been deported back to India over the past three years without any provided explanation. This information was disclosed by the Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh, during a parliamentary session on Friday.
The issue of Indian students being sent back from the US without clear reasons came to the forefront during a Lok Sabha session when BK Parthasarathi inquired about the number of students deported by the US in the last three years. He also questioned the government about its data on illegal Indian migrants abroad, particularly in the US, and the measures being taken to address this issue. The queries were reported by Onmanorama and the official website of India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh responded that while 48 Indian students have been deported, the US authorities have not officially communicated the reasons for these actions to the Indian government. He mentioned potential reasons for deportation, which could include "unauthorized employment, unapproved withdrawal from classes, expulsion and suspension, and failure to report Optional Practical Training (OPT) employments." Such violations can lead to the termination of student visas, rendering their stay in the US illegal.
In response to questions about illegal migration, Singh stated that the Indian government is working to strengthen international relationships to facilitate the legal mobility of its citizens. Efforts are also being made to combat illegal migration and to educate citizens about safe and legal ways to travel and work abroad. These measures are being implemented at both central and state levels to ensure the safety and legality of Indian nationals' international mobility.
