The Padma Bridge Rail Link Project, Bangladesh's largest railway, was formally opened on Tuesday (December 24). The first train, decked out in vibrant ribbons and balloons, arrived at the Dhaka station.
Constructed by China Railway Group and financed by the Export-Import Bank of China, the project is a key initiative under the Belt and Road framework. Locally known as the "Dream Road," the railway spans approximately 170 kilometers and significantly reduces travel time between Dhaka and the southwestern city of Jashore from 10 hours to just three.
The project is expected to be a game-changer for regional development, benefiting around 80 million people along its route and boosting Bangladesh’s GDP growth by 1.5 percentage points.
"This is a historic moment as Bangladesh enters a new era of railway connectivity through the Padma Bridge," said Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, adviser to the Ministry of Railways, during the opening ceremony.
Fahimul Islam, Secretary of the Ministry of Railways, emphasized the transformative potential of the railway. "The commercial operation of this new train marks the beginning of a transformative chapter in our nation's railway history. We deeply appreciate China's support in financing and constructing this pivotal project."
Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen described the railway as a model of China-Bangladesh economic cooperation. "This project reflects the enduring friendship between our two nations and our shared vision for sustainable development," he said.
Yao added that China remains committed to supporting Bangladesh’s development through continued collaboration in railway and infrastructure projects. "We aim to assist in industrial upgrades, export diversification, and deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership between our countries, enhancing the well-being of the Bangladeshi people."
The Padma Bridge Rail Link is poised to not only enhance connectivity but also drive economic and social progress, solidifying Bangladesh's position as a regional hub of development.
