Indonesia's internet penetration has experienced a notable increase, reaching 79.5% in January 2024, up from 78.1% in the previous year, according to the latest report by the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII). The survey reflects a consistent upward trajectory in internet adoption, showcasing the growing accessibility and utilization of digital technology in the country. Muhammad Arif, Chairperson of APJII, emphasized the positive trend revealed by the survey, indicating a steady rise in internet adoption since 2018 when the penetration rate was at 64%. This growth underscores the evolving digital landscape in Indonesia.
The "2024 Indonesia's Internet Penetration Survey" engaged 8,720 respondents aged 13 years and older across 38 provinces. Conducted using a multistage random sampling method from December 18, 2023, to January 19, the survey provided insights into the internet habits of various age groups.

Among the key findings, internet penetration rates were highest among millennials (aged 28–43), reaching 93.17% in 2024. Generation Z (aged 12–27) exhibited a penetration rate of 87.02%, and Generation X (aged 44–59) recorded a rate of 83.69%. The survey indicated that Generation Z contributed the most to internet utilization at 34.4%, surpassing millennials at 30.62%. The digital landscape also extends to the youngest generation, with Generation Alpha (aged under 12) showing an internet penetration rate of 48.1%, contributing 9.17% to internet utilization in Indonesia. This highlights the increasing integration of digital technology from an early age.
Arif emphasized the correlation between age and internet adoption, noting that the younger generation tends to have higher penetration and greater contributions to digital usage. This information holds significance for businesses aiming to understand the dynamics of Indonesia's digital space and tailor strategies accordingly.
The report also highlighted gender disparities, although narrowing, in internet penetration rates. Male and female rates stood at 87.6% and 85.5%, respectively. Men contributed 50.7% to internet usage, while women contributed 49.1%. The narrowing gender gap in internet adoption signifies a more inclusive digital environment.
The surge in internet penetration aligns with Indonesia's continuous digital transformation and indicates the need for businesses and policymakers to adapt to changing consumer behaviors and preferences.
In a related context, Statistics Indonesia's November 2023 report estimated Indonesia's population at 277.5 million, further emphasizing the significant impact of digital connectivity on a large and diverse demographic.
