From Gaza’s rubble-strewn streets to the doorsteps of world power, a wave of resistance surged on (April 7) as people across the globe launched a Global Strike for Gaza, demanding an end to what many are calling a genocide.
The unified action marked by mass protests, port shutdowns, embassy blockades, and work stoppages comes as the death toll in Gaza surpasses a harrowing 50,669 since October 7, 2023. Over 115,000 have been injured, with the numbers rising daily.
At the center of this international call to action is the Follow-Up Committee of National and Islamic Forces in Gaza, whose powerful statement urged people worldwide to take to the streets and demand accountability.
“This is a cry from every slaughtered child, grieving mother, and broken elder,” the statement read. “We call on the Arab and Islamic nations, and all free people, to mobilize globally in support of Gaza.”
From London to Lagos, Jakarta to Johannesburg, crowds flooded public squares and government buildings, raising their voices in unison. “Free Palestine” rang through megaphones. Streets were blocked. Ports refused to load Israeli-bound cargo. Students walked out.
The protests not only targeted Israel, but also its allies — particularly the United States, which continues to provide billions in military aid despite mounting civilian casualties.
“The silence of world leaders is not neutrality — it’s complicity,” said one protester in Berlin.
According to Gaza’s health ministry, 60 more people were killed and 162 injured in the past 24 hours alone. Many remain trapped under rubble with emergency crews unable to reach them due to ongoing bombardment.
Since Israel resumed its assault on March 18, following a brief ceasefire, at least 1,309 Palestinians have died. The statement from Gaza's leaders warned that this is not just about territory:
“The goals of this occupation don’t end with Gaza or the West Bank. Israel seeks to dominate the entire region through violence and bloodshed.”
As pressure mounts and solidarity actions multiply, organizers say this global strike is just the beginning of a sustained campaign to halt the destruction and hold governments accountable.
The world is watching — and many are refusing to look away.
