As Bangladesh gears up for a crucial clash against Singapore on June 10, head coach Javier Cabrera has expressed high optimism about his current squad, calling it the best lineup since he took charge of the national team in early 2022. The Spanish tactician credits the arrival of three expatriate players — UK-based Hamza Choudhury, Canada-based Shamit Shome, and Italy-based winger Fahamedul Islam — for significantly strengthening the team.

Speaking at the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) House on Wednesday, Cabrera announced a 26-man squad featuring these promising additions, emphasizing that the team is aiming for all three points in what is seen as a pivotal match in their qualification campaign.

“We Are Ready to Win”

Cabrera sounded confident when asked about Bangladesh’s chances against Singapore at home. “Our team is very strong. We have full belief in ourselves,” he said. Reflecting on the recent narrow defeat to India, the coach stressed that the team displayed high energy, pressing, and ambition — qualities he expects will be key to turning the tide in front of home supporters.

“If we are able to at least keep the same level of performance, that could be enough already to get a point, but we want three points,” he added. “We are absolutely convinced that at home, in these conditions, and with the full support that we are going to get, we definitely can get three points.”

Shamit Shome’s Arrival Sparks Midfield Reinforcement

The addition of Shamit Shome, who is set to make his debut for Bangladesh, has drawn particular excitement from fans and the coaching staff alike. With experience in Major League Soccer (MLS) and a technical profile suited to Cabrera’s tactical plans, Shome is expected to bring added depth and creativity to the midfield.

“I'm sure about it, in South Asia for sure,” Cabrera asserted when asked if Bangladesh now boasts the region’s best midfield. “We have a very strong midfield, especially in our group. Probably if not the best midfield, we are there.”

Alongside Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury — who debuted against India in March — and local talents, the inclusion of Shome could tilt the midfield battle in Bangladesh’s favor. “Shamit is a player with a lot of quality,” Cabrera noted. “Every single player coming to the team will have an impact.”

No Major Overhaul, But Tactical Adjustments Ahead

Despite the stronger lineup, Cabrera clarified that the core philosophy and playing identity of the team would remain intact. “The idea, the identity, the philosophy is the same,” he said. “Obviously, we always adjust according to the players that we have and the strengths and weaknesses of the rival.”

Fahamedul Islam’s Debut in Sight

Fahamedul Islam, the young winger playing in Italy, is also in line to make his national debut. Having been previously called in March, he is now expected to provide pace and flair in wide areas. Cabrera has kept a close watch on his development and believes the 21-year-old can make a difference in this campaign.

“I've been in touch with him continuously, speaking with him and with the sports director of his club, and I have decided that he can actually provide something to the team in this camp,” said Cabrera.

Fans' Expectations and National Pride

With Bangladesh’s World Cup and Asian Cup qualifying hopes on the line, the match against Singapore has taken on enormous significance. Cabrera acknowledged the growing anticipation from fans who are eager to see the expatriate trio in action.

“There is great excitement and a huge motivation for everyone,” he said. “We have a huge opportunity to make a very big impact in the society and in the country because everyone is expecting a lot from us.”

Bangladesh currently sits in a competitive group, and a win against Singapore could potentially position them at the top, keeping qualification hopes alive.

Javier Cabrera’s tenure with Bangladesh has reached a critical juncture, and the integration of overseas-born players reflects both ambition and strategic planning. With a mix of homegrown talent and international experience, the national team is poised to deliver a memorable performance. The June 10 encounter against Singapore could mark a defining moment — not just in this qualifying campaign, but in the modern history of Bangladesh football.
